| Palon, Nísiros
Logbook EntryDates: 09/29/09 - 09/30/09 Comments: A fantastic sail today -- a great end to the season! Turkey is in sight, but we have one more planned stop in Greece before clearing into our fifth country this sailing season. Nísiros is a circular, volcanic island and the site of a violent eruption in 1422 which left behind a huge caldera which we will have to visit another time. The end-of-season pull is stronger every day, so we pushed on after just a one-night stay. The harbor is quiet and well-protected. The the friendly harbor master needs a fast motor cycle to work slips on both sides. He actually gave us permission to tie-up "American-style" alongside the fishing pier for the night rather than med-moor with our own anchor. We went ashore to the little restaurant he recommended which was filled with yachties of many nationalities. We had a tasty fish dinner on our last night ashore in Greece.
