Preparations in Annapolis for Caribbean 1500 RallyWe spent the summer and early fall completing our list of refit projects in preparation for entering the Caribbean 1500 Rally. Our friend Ed on Blue Jacket at Port Annapolis Marina, was planning to participate in the rally for the third time. As he saw us working on our boat and heard of our plans to head south for the winter, he began to gently encourage us to enter the rally. We quickly came to the conclusion that it was the right thing for us after our experience sailing to the Bahamas earlier in the year. Major projects included redoing all of the standing rigging and lifelines, replacing all seven of the chain plates, having new headsails made and installing a Monitor windvane. See the photo gallery for more details on these projects. In addition to the rigging project, we had our favorite engine mechanic, Scott from Bayshore Marine, replace the alternator and overhaul some worn engine parts. We hired Diane from Almo to redo the cushions in the main cabin, making the change from royal blue velvet to willow green "faux" ultra suede. The new color is a nice change of pace and complements the teak interior and bronze patina found in the main cabin. Last, but not least, Lisa worked with John at Merke Marine to install two 65 watt solar panels on top of the existing Bimini. We also re-bedded deck prisms, rebuilt the anchor windlass and applied a few more coats of varnish on the exterior brightwork as part of our regular maintenance program.
